Introduction to Suesca
Suesca is a captivating climbing paradise in Colombia, located just about 60 km north of Bogotá, the capital of the country. Situated at an elevation of 2,700 meters above sea level, the region boasts rock formations ranging from 20 to 130 meters in height. The history of climbing in Suesca dates back to the 1930s, and today, it draws climbers from around the world.
Accessibility from Bogotá is incredibly convenient, taking only about an hour and a half. Travelers have various transportation options, including buses and fleets, readily available from Bogotá. This makes Suesca an easily accessible destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts looking to explore the spectacular cliffs and breathtaking scenery of this region.
History of Climbing in Suesca
The history of climbing in the Suesca rocks began in the 1930s with Erwin Kraus, a pioneer in climbing and mountaineering in Colombia. In the 1970s, Gonzalo Ospina and Alberto Castro embarked on their first climbing attempts on the rocks of Sindamanoy, en route to Suesca. Since then, Suesca has evolved into a prominent climbing destination.
In 1977, Felipe Errazuris introduced the first EB climbing shoes to Colombia, and the first 5.8-rated route named “Puños” was opened. In the 1990s, interest in sport climbing grew with the discovery of high-quality slabs in the Valle de los Halcones, which is also part of Suesca.
Geology of Suesca
The rocks of Suesca are of sedimentary origin and formed approximately 65 to 100 million years ago. During this period, the current plains of the Bogotá Savanna were part of marine platforms and beaches created during continental drift. Deposits of clay, silt, and sand gradually compacted over time to become clay and sandstones. These rocks, known as the Guadalupe Group, consist of four different formations:
- Hard Sandstone Formation: High resistance and rich in quartz.
- Plaeners Formation: Abundant in silica-rich claystones.
- Labour Sandstone Formation: Moderately resistant quartz sandstones.
- Delicate Sandstone Formation: Quartz and feldspar sandstones with thin porcelain layers.
The rocks also contain fossils of organisms that once lived in the seas and beaches. During the Cenozoic orogeny, the region uplifted, the sea retreated, and the rocks were shaped by tectonic movements and erosion.
Ideal Features for Climbing
The rocks in Suesca are primarily sandstone, composed of small quartz grains, occurring in layers from 0.5 to 3 meters thick. These rocks rise like cliffs up to 150 meters in height and feature cracks that provide various climbing routes. Alternating hard and soft layers create overhangs and protrusions. While most rocks offer good grip, some areas can be slippery. Some natural holds are formed by the erosion of wind and water.
