Planned Places/Cities
Manizales
Manizales is the capital of the Department of Caldas and part of the “Paisaje Cultural Cafetero”, a cultural heritage of UNESCO. With an average temperature between 11°C to 22°C (52–72°F) and an elevation of 2.160 meters (7.087 feet) above the sea, Manizales is usually cold and rainy so flight operations are only of limited reliability. Founded in 1849 by Antioquian colonists, today it is a city with economic, industrial, cultural, and tourist activities. Its central economic activity has traditionally been the cultivation and production of coffee. Thanks to the natural wealth and the great number of forests and natural reserves that surround the city, birdwatching has become an important reference for the impulse of tourism and the economy. Manizales is near the 5.300-meter (17.388 feet) snow-capped volcano Nevado del Ruiz, part of Los Nevados National Natural Park. Thanks to the presence of volcanoes, the area is rich in hot springs with therapeutic properties and spa resorts, such as Termales La Quinta and Termales del Ruiz, in the middle of stunning landscapes. During the year Manizales has several cultural activities and fairs like the Manizales Fair -where the International Queen of Coffee is elected, the International Theatre Festival of Manizales – the most important theatrical city in the history of Colombia, and the Festival Manizales Grita Rock.
Caldas
It’s capital is Manizales, and it is located in the western center of the Andean region, bordering Antioquia to the north, Boyacá to the northeast, Cundinamarca to the west and Tolima and Risaralda to the south. Caldas has the most mountainous relief of the country, it could be said that the biggest tourist attraction, not only of the department but of the region, is the Nevado del Ruiz of the National Natural Park Los Nevados, and its hot springs very close to the towns of Manizales and Villamaría. In this department it is possible to find all the thermal floors, from the warmest to the perpetual snow, with a great diversity of ecosystems.
