Barichara is known as the most beautiful town in Colombia. It is part of the Heritage towns network and enchants its visitors with its white, clay-tiled houses and cobblestone streets, besides its rich history. I recently visited this town in Santander and got to know some of the best hotels around, take a look.

Casa Barichara is a boutique hotel in the town, on a hill, that offers an inspirational environment for rest. From there you can enjoy a panoramic view of Barichara and the mountains.

It consists of a house that is a bioclimatic traditional building that recycles water and uses solar heating. A vegetable garden is under construction and the hotel undertakes reforestation activities. Social responsibility is a key pillar too.

Although the architecture keeps the colonial style, the rooms have a rather fresher decoration and are ample, with high ceilings. The Deluxe Double room with a mezzanine is suitable for groups of up to 4 people.

We recommend this hotel for travelers interested in wellness, heritage and outdoor activities.

Macedonia Hacienda Hotel is a luxurious hotel located in the countryside just 5 minutes from Barichara and 20 minutes from San Gil.

The premises consist of a Hacienda with over 200 years of history renovated in 2013 maintaining the local architectural style, therefore it involves wall, stone and wood. Another rustic building for accommodation was built later. Together, they make a romantic ambiance.

A highlight is an outdoor pool surrounded by vegetation that offers an enchanting landscape. Since the gardens boast over 350 plant species, plenty of bird species can be seen there.

The rooms feature details in wood and neutral colors, window balconies, and there are options for couples to families. For couples, we recommend the Junior suite that has a Jacuzzi or the Classic rooms in the original hacienda that have a comfier design and feature outdoor double showers.

This is a great option for demanding travelers and birders.

Terra Barichara is 10 minutes by car from the center of the town. The place is spacious, with various social areas, and the hotel was built under sustainability standards including the use of renewable energies, recycling of resources such as water, ecological vegetable garden and ensuring zero waste in the artisanal adobe building.

The rooms have a rustic style, with white walls and wood beams, nice lamps and large beds. The premium rooms include an individual or shared terrace.

For further relaxation, the suites feature a Jacuzzi and a private patio/garden, and the Grand suite an additional terrace. The Classic suite with Jacuzzi is a good option for couples, but for larger budgets, the Grand suite wins.

We recommend this hotel for elderly tourists and eco-conscious travelers.

La Nube Posada is a boutique hotel that belongs to the Aviatur group, known in the national tourism sector. It is just two blocks from the main park in Barichara. The colonial house has a large internal patio and the rooms are around it.

La Nube Gastronómica is the hotel’s restaurant that serves breakfast and a Mediterranean-fusion cuisine for lunch or dinner. It is connected with the interior garden that is visited by colorful birds.

The rooms boast a minimalist décor and distribution. Standard rooms are ideal for couples, Superior rooms have a Super King or twin beds and the Junior Suite has a sofa bed beside the Queen bed for an additional guest. Groups can also rent the whole house for an exclusive experience.

We recommend this hotel to practical groups, couples or solo travelers.

Casa Oniri Boutique Hotel is in the historic center of Barichara, just half a block away from the main park. This is another renovated colonial house that mixes details of the past with sophisticated modernity.

As traditionally, the house boasts a central patio, which is simply decorated with some pieces of furniture from Bali and has a small dark-colored water mirror. There is a comfortable lobby and the restaurant faces the garden. On the terrace, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the town and the mountains.

The rooms are ample and simply decorated, they have capacities from 2 to 5 people, that is why we recommend Casa Oniri to families.

Artepolis, more than a lodge, is a meeting point for cultural exchange whose goal is to create a convention and training center for art and culture in Barichara. This association is led by French citizens. It is 10 minutes walking from the town’s main park on a spot that offers an amazing view.

The house is beautifully decorated with a rustic design and has balconies, seating areas and a garden. The place offers three types of accommodation, for 2, 3 and 4 people. The rooms are wide, with minimalist furnishing but cozy wooden details. They feature private bathrooms with outdoor showers and rustic brick walls.

Artepolis offers several art workshops by local artists such as weaving, ceramics, woodwork, drawing, photography, among others.

We recommend staying in Artepolis to tourists interested in art, cultural exchange, calmness and with a low budget.

Posada Sueños de Antonio is another traditional house located 3 blocks from the town’s main park. Its wooden beams, rails, doors and windows are both in natural color and bright green paint, which creates a more vibrant and cozy ambiance.

Its rustic decoration keeps the historic local style. Among the highlights of the hotel is the backyard with a xeric garden visited by native birds, around which is the dining area and some hammocks. The corridors that connect the rooms also face this area.

The superior rooms on the second floor are the best option since they offer a balcony with views of the town and an outdoor shower. We recommend this hotel to couples and travelers on a tight budget.

La Casa de Hercilia guest house is a nice colonial house located 3 blocks from Barichara’s main park. It was a family house that the siblings that lived there decided to restore in homage to their mother, Hercilia.

The comfortable rooms boast a vintage décor, wooden beams and windows. Single travelers and groups of up to 3 will find a suitable room for their needs. The house garden is a nice environment with a small decorative pool, plants, and lounge area with poufs and hammocks, plus a café.

We recommend Casa de Hercilia for solo travelers, couples and small groups expecting the best value for money.

Timbarra Cottage

Timbarra Cottage is a lodge 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from Barichara, that is, you will reach the town in around 10-15 minutes by car and San Gil is 20 minutes away. It is an alternative option for staying near the most beautiful town in Colombia while being in the countryside. In general, the cottage boasts colonial architecture with clay tiles and wooden structures. The common areas include wide green zones, nice gardens, and the BBQ kiosk area.

The cabins feature comfy rooms for up to 5 people, a private bathroom, closet, TV, and two are equipped with a kitchen. From any cabin, you can enjoy views of the garden and the patios. Anangu is suitable for solo travelers or couples that will spend most of the day in town and don’t need to cook meals. Karu is ideal for small families and Palya for bigger families or groups.

This is not a hotel but a cool accommodation alternative. Nativo Glamping is crossing the Vereda El Llano Road from Macedonia Hacienda, which means it is 10 minutes by car from Barichara. It is an ecolodge implementing the glamping concept in a native forest, which they maintain and reforest thanks to their strategy of giving guests a tree for each booking that they can plant right in the reserve.

In El Caney guest center, they offer Wi-Fi, restaurant-bar service, event venues, and a terrace with Jacuzzi. Visitors can walk along cobbled paths into the woods around the entire premises.

You can choose among three types of accommodation. There are standard, deluxe and suite tents, all include breakfast and feature a private bathroom and a terrace. The difference is the capacity and bed size, and that the standard tent doesn’t have hammocks and an outdoor shower, so we recommend that for laid-back couples or solo travelers. The cabin is suitable for small families with kids. Finally, the maloca is ideal for groups or bigger families looking for more comfort, it accommodates up to 6 people and has a private garden and terrace.

We recommend this hotel to adventurers and eco-conscious travelers that want a nature experience without compromising comfort and luxury.
