Press Release: Colombia’s Tourism Soars Despite Challenges, But Sex Tourism Threatens Sustainable Growth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bogotá, Colombia – April 1st, 2024 — In 2023, Colombia’s tourism sector experienced growth despite challenges such as airline departures (Viva and Ultra Air) and VAT reintroduction on air tickets and hotel services. Compared to the previous year, passenger movement increased 2.9%, and international travelers rose 29.1%, reaching a milestone of 5.8 million non-resident visitors, exceeding the national government’s expectations.

However, a dark side lurks beneath this newfound popularity – sex and drug tourism. Just as Thailand has struggled with the negative impacts of this industry, Colombia faces a similar challenge, threatening to undermine its potential for sustainable, high-quality tourism.

Fueling Exploitation and Danger

According to a 2018 report by the World Economic Forum, Colombia has one of the highest rates of child sex tourism in South America. Sex tourism preys on vulnerable individuals, often minors, forcing them into exploitative situations. Criminal organizations exploit Colombia’s economic disparities, luring victims with false promises. This not only harms individuals but also feeds into human trafficking networks. Similarly, drug tourism fuels the illegal drug trade, perpetuating violence and instability.

Thailand’s Cautionary Tale

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, sex tourism has rebounded in Pattaya, Thailand, drawing hundreds of thousands of men seeking sexual encounters. This resurgence is fraught with controversies over exploitation, hypocrisy, and child prostitution. Thailand’s experience serves as a cautionary tale. The country’s initial tourism boom, partly fueled by sex tourism, ultimately damaged its reputation. Over time, Thailand has worked hard to shift its focus to cultural experiences and responsible tourism practices. However, the legacy of exploitation continues to cast a long shadow.

Colombia’s Fight for a Brighter Future

In some regions, local authorities are actively combating sex tourism. The new mayor of Cartagena appears to be making an impact with several initiatives. Yet, the reality is different in other areas. For instance, in Medellín, where child exploitation is rampant and children are offered to predators outside Lleras Park, the involvement of organized criminal groups and pervasive corruption hinder meaningful change. For years, foreigners have been dying in Medellín at an average of two per month from overdoses, caused by prostitutes misjudging the dosage.

The recent announcement from the Medellín mayor’s office to combat and shut down illegal Airbnb’s to curb sex tourism is merely a laughable PR stunt and will likely backfire soon. Following a recent incident involving an American tourist caught with minors in a Medellin hotel, the mayor declared on April 1st new measures to curb such activities: a ban on soliciting sexual services in designated public areas and a trial initiative to cut off alcohol sales in Lleras Park by 1:00 AM. This might be seen as an initial step towards tackling sex tourism.

The Importance of Quality Tourism

Colombia has much to offer – from the historic city of Cartagena to the verdant coffee region. Sustainable, high-quality tourism enriches local communities, encourages cultural exchange, and safeguards Colombia’s natural beauty. This emphasis on premium experiences is key to attracting affluent travelers. Wealthy tourists, in particular, tend to avoid destinations associated with sex tourism. They seek a safe, secure, and culturally enriching experience – precisely what Colombia strives to provide.

The Tourist’s Responsibility

Tourists have a pivotal role to play. Researching destinations and shunning establishments linked to exploitation are essential. Supporting ethical businesses that empower local communities has a positive ripple effect.

Colombia’s tourism industry holds immense promise. By eradicating sex and drug tourism, the nation can secure a future where tourism promotes cultural appreciation, economic growth, and safety for all.
